Old But New

Mission:
A Brand New Day
Location: Colorado Springs, Colorado
Colorado Springs, Colorado. This was home to him, in some ways at least. Captain Kevin Hawkins stepped out of the taxi in front of the house he had been partly raised in. It was left for him as his uncle, was assigned over seas for the time being. Deep down, it wasn’t completely home, but it was close enough as he strolled on up to the door and pulled out the house key from his pocket. Not a surprise as he unlatched the locks and stepped into the house.
The faint smell of the wood work was strong and comforting as he took in the sight of the hard wood flooring and finished furniture that they had worked on together when he was younger before joining the service. A slight grin peaked on his face but was cut off as he heard that annoying chim of the large clock in the dining room went off. So many times in his years being here, he wanted to take a hammer to it just to shut it up, but now… It was almost comforting as he was now older. He felt more comfortable and even enjoyed it, in that weird way.
He stepped into the living room, and he could tell that the cleaning lady had been in once in a while to keep things up to prevent too much dust build up. The couch sat in front of a medium fireplace, and a flat screen tv was now mounted above it with a new surround sound bar underneath it. This caused him to huff and shake his head as he knew that his Uncle Bill was the type to enjoy prepping things for Kevin. He spoiled him in which he wasn’t going to turn it down. Still, he wasn’t a kid anymore. At least not like he had been when he first came here.
Taking in a long sigh, he was about to check out the kitchen, then take his stuff up stairs to his room, but those thoughts were cut off as the doorbell ringed. An eye brow raised but he didn’t think much of it as he stepped back and remembered the hidden areas in which his uncle had hidden a chamber here and there where they could pull a weapon out to defend themselves if there was any intruders or what not. Uncle Bill thought of it all, and made sure to teach Kevin it all. Kevin knew deep down that his uncle was trying to make him to get his mind off of all that had gone on before his arrival to his uncle’s house. And … it helped.
Ignoring the desire to check the hidden chamber which should have hidden a short shot gun, he looked out the blurred glass of the front door to see two figures standing there that looked like they were colored blue. He opened the door to find that those thoughts were accurate as the two figures were air force members in dress blues.
“Captain Kevin Hawkins?” the female Master Sergeant asked as he she smiled lightly next to a Major.
“Yes?” Kevin nodded as he scanned the two and noticed the small folder in one of her hands.
“I am Master Sergeant Christine Bailey, and this is Major Timothy Maxfield. We have been assigned to retrieve you,” she explained as she adjusted slightly but did so without losing eye contact with the Captain. “If you don’t mind.”
“Uh yeah… Give me a minute to change,” the captain replied as he paused and looked at the two for a second. “You two wouldn’t have ids would ya?”
“Our uniforms not good enough for you, Captain” the Major raised an eye brow as he spoke up.
He paused and thought to himself before shrugging. “Can never be too safe, sir.”
A small chuckle escaped the master sergeant’s lips before they pulled out their CAC’s and showed them to Kevin. “Give me a couple minutes, sir, and ma’am.”
He quickly shut the door, and rushed up the stairs with his bags in his hands. It took, just minutes to quickly change into his blues as he had all his items ready to go in a moment’s notice. Making sure his tie was clipped, his uniform was clean and pressed and black dress shoes were shining, he grabbed his hat and out the door. He placed the hat on his head, locked the door and pocketed his items in his inside coat and pant pockets before taking in a deep breath. “Ready…” he paused and raised a hand, as he pulled out his black sun glasses and placed them on. “Ok, now I’m ready!”
“Damn pilots…” the major muttered as he shook his head before heading down the steps.
“Look good, captain!” the sergeant whispered before following suit. The three got into a black SUV and once in, the sergeant spoke up. “Alright, Captain, before we head out, we need to explain a couple things.”
“Ok…” Kevin was slightly puzzled still as he looked at the master sergeant and the Major.
“First, we need to have you sign this,” she handed Hawkins a folder with red bold bands around the outside and words that said, ‘Top Secret’ “It’s a nondisclosure letter. Basically, stating that from here on out, you are not to speak of anything about what you are about to see and be explained.”
Kevin took in a deep breath and could feel the feeling of nervousness start to build once again. He hadn’t felt like this in years, last being his assignment to Area 51 and the test pilot program. So even though he was used to this paperwork and the secret stuff… he still was a little antsie, to say the least. He signed on the form as required, and handed the paperwork and folder back to her.
“Captain, your service record indicates that you have been assigned to the Area 51 program and advanced alien technology which came through the Stargate a couple decades ago,” the ranking officer started to speak as the vehicle started down the road.
“Yes, I was but the Stargate program closed.”
“You shouldn’t have been told that detail at Area 51,” the major muttered as he shook his head.
“True, but history helped us know what to expect and how to answer any questions we were asked over our experiences. But you should have had access to my redacted service records, as Area 51 requires a specialized top secret clearance which is only for those assigned to that base and is updated every couple months. How?”
“Because we have even higher clearance than those at Area 51,” the major explained. “As you do as of today.”
“I don’t understand…” Hawkins raised his eye brow and cocked his head but listened intently.
“It’s the Stargate program. It’s reopened…” the sergeant explained.
There was a long pause and a buildup of joy and excitement was starting to be seen in his eyes. “NO F…”
